10 Shocking Facts About Memorial Day Weekend Accidents in Pennsylvania

Memorial Day Weekend is traditionally a time of significant auto accidents. So, how did Pennsylvanians do on the road during Memorial Day Weekend 2010?

Here’s a look at the facts provided by the Pennsylvania State Police:

  • 776 accidents occurred on Pennsylvania roads;
  • 70 accidents were alcohol related;
  • 16 people died in Pennsylvania accidents;
  • None of the 16 fatalities were wearing seatbelts;
  • Only 9 fatalities were reported by the state police over Memorial Day Weekend 2009;
  • The area covered by Troop H of the State Police had the highest number of fatalities and injuries.  Troop H includes Adams, Cumberland, Franklin, Perry, Dauphin and York counties;
  • 290 people were injured in Pennsylvania accidents;
  • 8,096 speeding tickets were issued;
  • 105 people were cited for not having children in proper safety seats; and
  • 924 tickets were issued for not wearing seatbelts (more than 2,500 warning were given for the same reason).

These numbers only reflect incidents handled by the state police.  Additional accidents, injuries and tickets were handled by local police departments across the Commonwealth.  As the summer driving season begins, Pennsylvania accident lawyers remind Pennsylvanians to drive safely, to enjoy the nice weather, and to avoid tragedy.
