One Hour Results in More than 15 Accidents in the Poconos Yesterday

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

The weather and road conditions were less than ideal in many parts of Pennsylvania yesterday.  However, drivers in Long Pond and Mount Pocono had to contend with not only wet roads but also with slippery snow and freezing rain.  The temperature dropped suddenly at about 2:30 pm and the heavy rain turned into winter weather.

In just the one hour period from approximately 2:30-3:30 pm the Monroe County 911 Control Center reported receiving calls of 15-20 accidents along Long Pond Road and Route 196.  The snow continued after 3:30 and additional accidents did occur but the number dropped substantially once the road crews began to treat the roads.

The extent of the injuries and the names of the people who were injured have not yet been released.

2 Injured in Washington County Toll Booth Crash

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Yesterday morning, Wednesday March 24, a serious crash occurred on the Mon – Fayette Expressway (Route 43) in Washington County.  The accident occurred just after 6:30 a.m. at the California, PA toll booth.

A car driven by Kami Ekale, age 42 of Somerset, went out of control and struck the curb between the toll lanes.  Her car then rear ended the vehicle in front of her which was driven by Albert Gauden, Jr., age 55 of West Newton.

The force of the collision forced Mr. Gauden’s car into the EZ Pass Lane where it destroyed the EZ Pass equipment.  That lane will remain closed indefinitely.

Both drivers, Ms. Ekale and Mr. Gauden, suffered injuries and were taken to Mon Fayette Hospital.  Their condition has not been released.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.  Ms. Ekale claims that her car unintentionally accelerated but the state trooper working on the case says that an inspection of the vehicle does not support that claim.

Pennsylvania Driver’s Education Classes

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Driver’s education is not required as prerequisite to getting a Pennsylvania driver’s license, but it is offered in many parts of the state and it is important. New drivers who choose not to take a driver’s education course must wait until age 18 to get a driver’s license and must have 50 hours of supervised driving experience with their parent or guardian.

The easier, and often safer, way to qualify for a license is to take a local driver’s education course. Typically, these courses involve 30 hours of classroom or online training and 6 or more hours of on the road driving time. The on the road driving time counts toward the 50 hours of minimum supervised driving time required to obtain a license.

How to Choose a Driver’s Education Course

When you are considering which local driver’s education course to choose for yourself or your child, consider:

  1. The driving school’s years in business;
  2. The driving school’s success rate in getting students licensed on the first try;
  3. The number of hours spent with an instructor on the road;
  4. The number of hours spent in the classroom or in a virtual (online) classroom;
  5. The price; and
  6. Other special considerations such as other languages spoken if you do not speak English well, or whether the school has worked with students with disabilities in the past if your child is disabled or qualifies for special education.

Why Driver’s Education is Important

Pennsylvania roads can be dangerous. Accidents happen frequently and often involve teenage drivers or other new drivers who lack the driving skills of more experienced drivers. Men and women under the age of 25 had the highest percentage of accidents in Pennsylvania during 2008, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

Therefore, it is important to provide children and new drivers with the skills to be safe on our roads.  Unfortunately, accidents will still happen and if you, or your child, has been hurt in a Pennsylvania car crash then you should contact a Pennsylvania car accident attorney today for more information about your legal rights.

Off Duty Philadelphia Cop Arrested for Drunk Driving Accident

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Last month a state trooper was helping a tow truck operator with an abandoned vehicle on I-95 when he was hit by a drunk driver, pinned between two cars, and injured.

The drunk driver was an off duty 23 year old Philadelphia police officer named Matthew Sharkey who had been on the force for three years.  Officer Sharkey was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving and the state trooper whom he hit suffered significant knee injuries.  The state trooper, tow truck driver, Officer Sharkey and his passengers are lucky that they all survived the accident without life threatening injuries.  Many Pennsylvania drunk driving accidents do not end as well.

Pennsylvania Drunk Driving Statistics

In 2008, there were more than 12,700 drunk driving accidents and more than 530 drunk driving fatalities in Pennsylvania according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.  Alcohol was a factor in more than one third of Pennsylvania’s fatal accidents.  While drunk driving is a concern in every demographic, Officer Sharkey falls into one of the worst offending groups – males between the ages of 21 and 25.

Drunk driving is a crime in Pennsylvania. It is illegal to drive in Pennsylvania with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of more than 0.08.  Convicted drunk drivers face potential sentences of jail time (ranging from probation to 5 years), significant fines (from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars), and driver’s license suspension.

Contact a Pennsylvania Personal Injury Lawyer

Victims of drunk driving accidents, or their survivors, may be entitled to compensation for their injuries.  In order to receive compensation it may be necessary to file a civil lawsuit in addition to any criminal charges brought by the state against the alleged drunk driver.  An experienced Pennsylvania personal injury lawyer can help you assess your case and recover any damages to which you may be entitled by law.
