Around 1 a.m. yesterday morning, a tractor trailer truck carrying potatoes crashed into a concrete barrier on the Pennsylvania Turnpike between Monroeville and Irwin. The truck was swerving to avoid hitting a car that was attempting to pass it on the right.
The car’s driver, Tricia McCaslin of Manheim also hit the concrete barrier. Then, five other vehicles including 2 tractor trailers became involved in the accident because they either could not slow down in time to avoid striking another vehicle or because they were hit by debris.
Traffic was shut down for hours on the Pennsylvania Turnpike and limited lanes were open throughout the day on April 27, 2010 as crews worked to repair the concrete barrier. More importantly, however, at least one person was injured in the accident. Her name and condition have not yet been released.
