Off Duty Officer Killed in Accident

Shortly after 1 a.m. yesterday, an off duty police officer drove the wrong way on the Schuylkill Expressway and collided with another vehicle.  The officer has been identified as 48 year old John Quigg Jr. of Glenside.    Officer Quigg was on restrictive duty following a drunk driving incident from last December where his blood alcohol level was found to be nearly four times the legal limit.

John Quigg was killed in last night’s accident.

The accident also seriously injured 23 year old Chantelle Harper of Philadelphia who was driving the vehicle that Officer Quigg collided with as he was driving the wrong way on the Spring Garden Street Ramp to the Schuylkill Expressway.  Ms. Harper is being treated at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

The reason that Officer Quigg was headed the wrong way on the expressway ramp has not yet been disclosed.

Horrific Wrong Way Crash Kills at Least One and Injures at Least Four in Bern Township

Just before 11 a.m. yesterday, a 75 year old driver drove the wrong way on Route 222 in Bern Township and caused a 5 vehicle crash.  The driver got on Route 222 at the Spring Ridge Interchange, near the Body Zone and the accident occurred just before the bridge over the Tulpehocken Creek.

The driver was killed in this Pennsylvania car accident.

The elderly driver’s car hit a car driven by Paul Wise head on.  Mr. Wise was seriously injured and taken to Reading Hospital.  Another person was also taken to Reading Hospital and two injured people were taken to St Joseph Medical Center. Their identities and conditions have not yet been released.

There is no word on what caused the elderly driver to head the wrong way on Route 222.

Lancaster Hit and Run Driver Kills Bicyclist

Early Thursday morning a bicyclist was killed while riding in the 700 block of New Holland Avenue in Lancaster.  The accident happened around 1 a.m.

The police found the bicyclist about a block over from where the accident occurred.  This driver who hit the bicyclist fled the scene of the accident. 

The bicyclist was taken to Lancaster General Hospital and died a short time after arriving at the hospital.  His identity has not yet been released but police say that he was a 27 year old man from East Hempfield Township.

Police believe that the car that hit the bicyclist was a German make hatchback style car.  Anyone with any information about this Lancaster hit and run accident is urged to call Lancaster Police.

5 Vehicle Crash Results in 2 Fatalities and 2 Injuries on Monday

A five vehicle crash on state Route 56 in West Saint Clair Township resulted in two fatalities and two moderate injuries on Monday.  The Bedford County truck and auto accident happened around 6:30 a.m.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police, a Sterling tractor trailer truck was traveling east when it rear ended a Pontiac Grand Am and pushed the Grand Am into the westbound lane.  After that collision, the Sterling truck began to roll over and in so doing hit a westbound International truck pushing the International truck over the guardrail and down an embankment.  The Sterling truck then hit two more eastbound vehicles.

Both truck drivers were killed in the accident.  Their names have not yet been released.    Nathan Daniel Vogel of Johnstown and Mary Kauffman of Osterburg were injured in the accident.  Mr. Vogel was driving the Grand Am involved in the first crash and Ms. Kauffman was driving one of the cars hit by the Sterling truck after its crash with the International truck.  The driver of the third car was not injured.

Jackson Township SUV Accident Leaves 1 Dead and 6 Injured

A Sunday afternoon crash resulted in at least one death and six injuries in Lebanon County.  The two car accident occurred around 4:30 p.m. on Route 501 in Jackson Township, just south of the Berks County line.  The accident victims included a teenage fatality, 2 injured children and 4 injured adults.

According to police reports, 19 year old Ilya Krupenya of Myerstown was driving southbound on Route 501 when his SUV crossed over into the northbound lane and collided head on with an SUV driven by John Sattizahn  of Pine Grove.  Ilya Krupenya was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

Mr. Sattizahn and his five passengers were all taken to Hershey Medical Center.  Two of the injured passengers were children, aged 8 and 10.  Their names have not been released and they were reported in fair condition on Monday.  The four adults who were hurt include the driver, John Sattizahn, Dawne Sattizahn, Mark Ketch and Denise Ketch.  As of Monday, three of the adults were in critical condition and one is in serious condition.

The cause of the Lebanon County accident remains under investigation.

Southwest Philadelphia Accident Leaves One Dead and Three Injured

Late Saturday night, a three car crash at the intersection of 61st and Passyunk resulted in tragedy.  A woman, believed to be in her 30s or  40s, was sitting in her black Buick at the intersection waiting for the red light to change to green.

As she waited for the light to change, a 31 year old male rear ended her with such force that her car was pushed into the intersection where it was hit by a Kia Optima that was driving through the intersection on a green light.

The driver of the Buick was ejected from her car and killed in the accident.  She was pronounced dead at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.  A man and a woman from other cars involved in the accident are reported to be in a critical condition.  A person from the car that rear ended the Buick is reported in stable condition.  The names of the victims have not yet been released.

2 People Killed and 2 People Hurt in a Duquesne Car Accident

Early Sunday morning a fatal two car accident occurred on Thompson Run Bridge in Duquesne.  The accident happened just after 1:45 a.m. when a Mazda 626 that was travelling northbound on Route 837 crossed the center lane and hit a Chevrolet Trailblazer that was travelling southbound.

The head on collision killed the 21 year old male driver of the Mazda who was from McKeesport and his 26 year old passenger who was from Elizabeth.

The driver and passenger in the Chevrolet were hurt.  The driver is reported to be in critical condition at a Pittsburgh hospital and the passenger is reportedly in stable condition.

The identities of the victims have not yet been released and there is no word on what caused the Mazda to cross the center lane and strike the Chevrolet head on.

Altoona Man Dies in Cumberland Township Accident

Three pickup trucks were involved in back to back accidents early Wednesday morning in Cumberland Township, PA.  The accidents happened along Route 220 at approximately 5:30 a.m.  The death of one of the drivers, Mr. Jeffrey Quirin, age 46 of Altoona, was reported.

Mr. Quirin’s pickup truck was hit head on by a pickup truck driven by an 18 year old driver,  Andrew Hickey, from Bedford.  Just before that head on collision, a third pickup truck driven by Dean Halteman of Mapleton Depot had crossed into the lane where Mr. Hickey’s truck was traveling.  Mr. Hickey hit the trailer of Mr. Halteman’s truck which then caused his truck to swerve and hit Mr. Quirin’s truck.

The police plan to reconstruct the accident and the Bedford County district attorney is assisting in the investigation.

Fatal Accident on Pennsylvania Turnpike

A fatal accident occurred on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Allegheny County on Wednesday afternoon.  The accident happened between the Butler Valley and Cranberry Township interchanges, near mile marker 36.

Shortly after 2 p.m., a tri-axle truck slowed down to enter an access ramp.  The car behind the truck also slowed down but the SUV behind the car did not slow down and the SUV hit the car, forcing it under the back end of the truck.

The driver of the car, 42 year old Theresa Pastore of Delaware County, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.  The driver of the SUV suffered minor injuries and was released from the hospital on Wednesday afternoon. 

The eastbound lanes of the Pennsylvania Turnpike were closed for several hours near the accident scene as police investigated the death of Ms. Pastore and the cause of the accident.

York County Accident Kills One Teenager and Injures Three

At about 1:30 yesterday afternoon an SUV was involved in a fatal accident on Grant Road in Hanover.  One driver and three passengers – all female teenagers from New Oxford High School- were travelling in the SUV at the time of the crash. 

The Ford SUV hit a tree resulting in one death and three significant injuries.  The front seat passenger was pronounced dead at Hanover Hospital less than an hour after the accident.  The driver was flown to Hershey Medical Center with serious injuries and the backseat passengers were flown to York Hospital with significant injuries.  The prognosis of the three injured victims is not yet known. 

The one vehicle accident happened when the SUV hit a tree and caught fire.  Neighbors in nearby homes tried to put the fire out to save the girls further injury.  The names of the victims have not yet been released.
