The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), AAA and Seventeen Magazine have teamed up to create a video contest that will end this Friday. The National Two-Second Turnoff Day Viral Video Challenge, which runs from August 2 – September 10, 2010, is designed to raise awareness about the dangers of texting and driving among young drivers.

If you are a teenager who would like to participate, you need to create a video to combat distracted driving and upload it to www.seventeen.com/twosecond. The winner’s video will be shared at the DOT’s second annual distracted driving summit on September 21, and be featured on websites for Seventeen Magazine, AAA and the DOT. The winner will also receive a $2,000 cash prize.

This contest is meant to be a fun way to combat a serious problem. In addition to the contest prizes described above, teenagers are provided with a real and meaningful way to learn about the dangers of distracted driving and to save lives.

Last week, Ford Motor Co. recalled more than half a million Ford Windstar minivans in the United States and Canada. The majority of the recalled vehicles, 462,750 were recalled in the United States and an additional 112,000 were recalled in Canada.

The recall is due to concern that the rear axle may corrode and fracture. If this were to happen while the driver was operating the vehicle, the driver could lose control of the minivan and a serious car accident could result.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has been investigating this problem since May 2010 and has been informed of Ford’s recall. At least two accidents that were caused by a corroded and fractured rear axle have been reported to the NHTSA.

The recalled models are all Ford Windstars from model years 1998-2003 and were sold in 21 U.S. states including Pennsylvania. If your car has been recalled then be sure to contact your dealer who will fix your car free of charge as soon as parts are available.

Communities across the Commonwealth are gearing up for the start of the new school year. Along with newly sharpened pencils and neat haircuts comes another September certainty – parental anxiety. Part of that anxiety relates the school bus. Parents worry that their children will get hurt getting on, riding on, or getting off the school bus.

Motorists must remember that they must obey all school bus laws and crossing guard directions to keep school children safe.

In Pennsylvania, drivers approaching from every direction must stop at least 10 feet away from a school bus that has its red lights flashing and its stop sign extended. Failure to do so can result in fines, points on a license and license suspension.

Additionally, the speed limit in school zones is 15 mph. Failure to obey the speed limit can result in a $500 fine and 3 points on a license.

The Pennsylvania car accident lawyers wish everyone a safe start to the 2010 – 2011 school year and urge motorists to drive carefully to prevent tragic accidents.

Jon’s approach to Allegheny County accidents is simple. He wants the insurance company to provide you with fair and equitable damages quickly. If the insurance company is not willing to provide damages quickly then Jon will file a lawsuit on your behalf while continuing to negotiate a settlement.
