Communities across the Commonwealth are gearing up for the start of the new school year. Along with newly sharpened pencils and neat haircuts comes another September certainty – parental anxiety. Part of that anxiety relates the school bus. Parents worry that their children will get hurt getting on, riding on, or getting off the school bus.
Motorists must remember that they must obey all school bus laws and crossing guard directions to keep school children safe.
In Pennsylvania, drivers approaching from every direction must stop at least 10 feet away from a school bus that has its red lights flashing and its stop sign extended. Failure to do so can result in fines, points on a license and license suspension.
Additionally, the speed limit in school zones is 15 mph. Failure to obey the speed limit can result in a $500 fine and 3 points on a license.
The Pennsylvania car accident lawyers wish everyone a safe start to the 2010 – 2011 school year and urge motorists to drive carefully to prevent tragic accidents.
