Pennsylvania Driver’s Education Classes

Driver’s education is not required as prerequisite to getting a Pennsylvania driver’s license, but it is offered in many parts of the state and it is important. New drivers who choose not to take a driver’s education course must wait until age 18 to get a driver’s license and must have 50 hours of supervised driving experience with their parent or guardian.

The easier, and often safer, way to qualify for a license is to take a local driver’s education course. Typically, these courses involve 30 hours of classroom or online training and 6 or more hours of on the road driving time. The on the road driving time counts toward the 50 hours of minimum supervised driving time required to obtain a license.

How to Choose a Driver’s Education Course

When you are considering which local driver’s education course to choose for yourself or your child, consider:

  1. The driving school’s years in business;
  2. The driving school’s success rate in getting students licensed on the first try;
  3. The number of hours spent with an instructor on the road;
  4. The number of hours spent in the classroom or in a virtual (online) classroom;
  5. The price; and
  6. Other special considerations such as other languages spoken if you do not speak English well, or whether the school has worked with students with disabilities in the past if your child is disabled or qualifies for special education.

Why Driver’s Education is Important

Pennsylvania roads can be dangerous. Accidents happen frequently and often involve teenage drivers or other new drivers who lack the driving skills of more experienced drivers. Men and women under the age of 25 had the highest percentage of accidents in Pennsylvania during 2008, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

Therefore, it is important to provide children and new drivers with the skills to be safe on our roads.  Unfortunately, accidents will still happen and if you, or your child, has been hurt in a Pennsylvania car crash then you should contact a Pennsylvania car accident attorney today for more information about your legal rights.
